Mending Through Metaphor: Art Therapy for Healing in Cancer Care
Canadian Art Therapy Association Journal, Jun 16, 2019. Kathleen M Buday.
This article illustrates the power of metaphor and symbolism to aid women in expressing their journeys of breast cancer. Through a group case example from a two-hour photogram art therapy workshop with eight women (ages 43–62 years) at varying stages of breast cancer, it is revealed how one session provided empowerment and connection. The role and benefits of publicly exhibiting artwork created in an art therapy workshop to inform and inspire are also explored.
Engage, Empower, and Enlighten: Art Therapy and Image Making in Hospice Care Progress in Palliative Care, Kathleen M Buday. Volume 21, Number 2 · May 1, 2013.
This article provides an introduction to the field of art therapy and speaks to the benefits it may offer to support the emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being of hospice patients. When art therapy exists as part of an interdisciplinary hospice team, it can enhance the holistic continuum of end of life comfort care. One case study is discussed that illustrates the art therapy journey for a hospice patient and the ensuing benefits including: using imagery and symbolism to communicate challenging emotions; gaining self-empowerment through the engagement of making art and reflecting on the resulting product; and, offering a non-threatening means to explore thoughts and feelings.
